The Industry Embraces Intent-Based Networking

June 22, 2017

This is a really big week for Apstra -the CEO of the largest networking company in the worldgave a ringing endorsement and stated that Intent-Based Networking is the future of Cisco and of the industry – it really cannot get much better than this!

Chuck Robbins personally introduced Cisco’s new network, powered by intent. To quote him, Let’s think about a financial institution that wants to ensure that the top tier of the customers have the best experience. Today the way that works is that they define quality of service and they have hundreds of engineers who would go through and deploy those lines of code throughout the infrastructure. With intent-based infrastructure, the customer describes the intent (…) and through automation and machine learning the network will deploy that intent in an automated way in a matter of moments, and over time the network will adapt and learn using machine learning so that it can optimize that experience for the customer of the bank based on the policy and the intent that the bank defines.

That is indeed intent-based networking, which Apstra pioneered as part of our founding vision back in 2014. The operator defines business intent and through automation and closed-loop telemetry, the infrastructure delivers on this business intent in a matter of minutes. In the process, operational expenses are reduced massively through a reduction in the inefficient manual work which consumes 80% of operators’ time today. And we move from inefficient box-by-box, manual operations to system-level, intent-based operations. The ultimate goal is to deliver on the vision of a self-operating network, which Apstra defines as a network that configures itself, monitors itself, fixes itself, and documents itself.

We invited the industry to join us on our journey, and they are! In February of this year Gartner published a report called Innovation Insight: Intent-Based Networking Systems (IBNS) and created a new category and market opportunity. In the report, they call our flagship product Apstra Operating System (AOS) the only full Intent Based Networking System available; and this week, Cisco launched intent-based networking products which it called one of the most significant breakthroughs in enterprise networking.

What we want to be really careful of though is that the community’s goals for Intent-Based Networking, and what we at Apstra sometimes call the ‘Self Operating Network,’ are not subordinated to any single vendor’s viewpoint. We watched what happened with the dilution of SDN and the purposeful confusion that was sown in the market with projects like Open Daylight while some vendors paid lip service to interoperability and standards. It is of paramount importance that we as a networking industry come together and vote with our voices and our spending power on a new order – one where vendors are held to high standards by the consumers, where we are pushed to work together and not lock anyone into a solution or system, and where, as Cisco employees have proudly worn on their badgesfor decades, there is ‘no technology religion.’

Our job is to innovate and push the boundaries of what our customers have thought possible, to build systems and features and capabilities that delight them and help them be ever more successful. If we do our jobs and deliver high quality products that amaze our customers and solve pressing business and IT challenges – we know we are going to be able to build a thriving and sustainable company at which the best and brightest engineers will be proud to work.

As we continue to lead the technical charge in building Intent-Based Networking systems it is important that we keep a clear eye towards that goal and what it really is – to build a system where the outcome is pre-defined and the configuration, cabling, and operating context are constantly evaluated against the operator’s goals. We aim to subordinate the atomic CLI, SNMP, and even XML configurations to a higher-order, the Intent. Intent defines what we really want, configuration is our attempt to achieve our Intent with the language and semantics that the vendors provide to us.

I’d like to thank Chuck Robbins from Cisco for recognizing what an incredibly powerful capability Intent-Based Networking is for all of the Cloud, Service Provider, Enterprise, and Small/Medium network operators out there. We sincerely hope that as Cisco joins this community they continue to add technical and market-focused capabilities and help usher in this next wave of networking.

If you’re still sitting on the sidelines of Intent-Based Networking Systems, this is the time to get in the game. I invite you to follow Gartner’s recommendation, pilot intent-based networking solutions, and budget for it using improved network agility, increased network uptime, and/or better alignment with business initiatives as the funding drivers.

Apstra is the only vendor that has a data center focused, vendor agnostic, full intent-based network system available today, and we would love to hear from you.

We look forward to celebrating this win for customers at @CiscoLive at our joint party with Packet Pushers, which wenamed Intent to Party (the pun is… intended!). So if you’re an IT professional, please schedule a 1:1 to see a demo at our booth and request an invitation to join us and learn more about Apstra and our intent-based networking solutions.

I would have normally said see you there as I would never miss such an event to celebrate with my fellow Apstrktrs and connect with our customers. But on a personal note we’re expecting our third daughter any day, and I am choosing to stay back in the Bay Area to support my family. I will certainly be with the team in spirit, as we redefine networking for the digital age.

Please read my guest blog titled Intent-Based Networking Use Cases At #CLUS17 on Packet Pushers blog. Register for a 1:1 demo or stop by our booth #2925 to request an invitation for our Intent to Party!

Trump’s Healthcare Plan Cuts Medicaid, Taxes

June 22, 2017

Plan Defunds Planned Parenthood

Senate Republican leaders released adraftof their long-awaited ObamaCare repeal-and-replace bill ahead of a high-stakes vote expected next week. The controversial plan will make massive cuts in Medicaid to pay for tax cuts.

The plan, whose development was overseen by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), attempts to strike a balance between the demands of conservative GOP senators who want an aggressive repeal of the ACA, sometimes called Obamacare, and more centrist lawmakers eager to retain some aspects of the law.The measure will reshape Medicaid from an open-ended government commitment to a system of capped federal payments each year.

The bill repeals billions of dollars in taxes that were used to raise money for ObamaCare’s coverage expansion and also abolishes the law’s mandates to buy coverage. The bill relies on the 2010 law’s current tax credits to provide subsidies to people who don’t get health insurance on the job. But this legislation would tighten the income eligibility for the assistance, meaning fewer people would be able to get the subsidies. The credits would also be less robust than under the ACA.

It’s time to act because ObamaCare is a direct attack on the middle class and American families deserve better, Senate Majority LeaderMitch McConnell(R-Ky.) said Thursday. They deserve better care.

Senate Democratic LeaderCharles Schumer(N.Y.) countered by pointing to the bill’s tax cuts, which will cut services to the poor, aged and disabled. Meanwhile, the tax cuts will benefit high earners.

This is a bill designed to strip away healthcare benefits and protections from Americans who need it most in order to give a tax break to the folks who need it least, Schumer said.

The Republican measure phases out the federal funding for ObamaCare’s expansion of Medicaid, which has provided coverage for about 11 million people in 31 states. The funding will phase out over four years from 2020 to 2024, which is less than the seven-year phase-out pushed by more moderate Republicans.

The measure includes deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House bill, starting in 2025. Starting in that year, the cap on Medicaid payments would start growing at a slower rate, leading to deeper cuts over time. The Senate proposal would cap states’ Medicaid funding for the first time in the program’s history.

It remains to be seen how centrist Republicans, like Sens.Rob Portman(R-Ohio) andShelley Moore Capito(R-W.Va.), will react to the shorter timeframe for the Medicaid phase-out. Some, like Sen.Lisa Murkowski(R-Alaska), have indicated they might not want to phase out Medicaid expansion funding at all.But those senators will be under intense pressure from leaders to back the bill and deliver a legislative victory to President Trump.

politics USA

The legislation keeps much of ObamaCare’s tax credit structure in place, a shift from the House bill, which created a new, less-generous tax credit system.Still, the Senate bill scales back the ObamaCare tax credits to provide less assistance to people when buying coverage.

The measure would strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood Federation of America for one year, and it prohibits tax credits from being used to purchase plans that offer abortion coverage.

Democrats and many rank and file Republican lawmakers criticized GOP leaders for keeping the details of the bill secret until Thursday. The release gives lawmakers and the public about one week to review the bill before the vote, which some Republican lawmakers have said might not be enough time.

Mr. McConnell has set a rapid-fire timeline for passage. An analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, laying out the bill’s effect on the budget and the number of uninsured, could come as early as Monday. Republican Senators, some of whom hadn’t seen text of the draft bill until its release, would have a week to digest it before a possible vote in advance of their July 4 recess. House Republicans would then take up the bill under a similar fast track.

The CBO report on the House-passed bill, released late last month, showed it would leave 23 million more people uninsured while reducing the cumulative federal deficit by $119 billion in the next decade compared with current law. It will be interesting to see the CBO’s evaluation of the current proposal.

Preventing Dementia A Challenging Plan

June 22, 2017

New Report Offers Little Hope In Battle Against Neurodegenerative Disease

By Sharon Begley, STAT

Alzheimer’s disease drug treatments have met failure after failure. Many peoplehave decided that prevention is the only hope. Unfortunately, a U.S. panel of experts claims that prevention might be just as elusive as a cure.

From physical activity to avoiding high blood pressure to brain training, a 17-member committee assembled by the National Academies of Sciences concluded, no interventions are supported by high-strength evidence. Instead, some high-quality studies found that one or another intervention worked, but other equally rigorous studies found they didn’t.

Alzheimer's disease diagnosisThe three prevention strategies that the report focused on were cognitive training, blood pressure control, and physical activity. (Unfortunately, it didn’t track dietary factors.)

  1. Cognitive training:The evidence for programs aimed at boosting reasoning, problem-solving, memory, and speed of processing does include randomized trials that reported benefits from brain training, but the report calls that evidence low to moderate strength. One problem: There seemed to be benefits for two years, but not after five or 10. Results in other randomized studies were even more equivocal. There are also data from studies that are less rigorous, leading the committee to conclude that brain training (computer-based or not) can delay or slow age-related cognitive decline – but not Alzheimer’s.
  2. Blood pressure:Evidence that this helps is weaker still. It’s mostly not based on randomized controlled trials, but the committee decided there is sufficient evidence from other kinds of studies as well as from understanding how the brain works to conclude that managing hypertension (especially from ages 35 to 65) can prevent, delay, or slow Alzheimer’s disease, and therefore to include it in public health messages. But there’s no good evidence on how best to reduce high blood pressure; of all the kinds of drugs that do so, however, angiotensin receptor blockers seem to be the best for cognition, for unknown reasons.
  3. Physical activity:Evidence for this is on a par with that for blood pressure: evidence is insufficient to conclude whether increasing physical activity prevents or slows Alzheimer’s disease. Randomized controlled trials only sometimes showed benefit, though there is some evidence from other kinds of studies shows that exercise delays or slows age-related cognitive decline (but not Alzheimer’s disease).

Even though clinical trials have not conclusively supported the three interventions, Alan Leshner, chair of the committee and CEO emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, said in a statement, the evidence is strong enough to suggest the public should at least have access to these results to help inform their decisions.

The disappointing conclusion comes in the wake of areviewpublished last month of the 105 experimental anti-Alzheimer’s compounds in development. It concluded that their immediate prospects are so poor that the U.S. is unlikely to meet its goal of having a meaningful therapy for Alzheimer’s by 2025. That makes the need for prevention strategies greater than ever.

Some experts outside the committee said it had set too high a bar. Henry Mahncke, CEO of brain-training company Posit Science, criticized the committee for lumping together all kinds of cognitive training. That diluted the results showing that the kind that taps into neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change its structure and function, consistently works, while other forms have poor to mixed results.

The Alzheimer’s Association said it is sticking with its 10 Ways to Love Your Brain and reduce the risk of dementia. The 10 include physical activity, lifelong learning, heart health, and sound sleep.

No one is promising this is going to prevent Alzheimer’s, said spokesman Niles Frantz, but we think there is enough evidence to say it can reduce your risk. Unlike the committee, he said, we believe it is worth talking publicly about these things.

The neurobiology of dementia suggests that a multifaceted approach [to prevention] may be most effective, the report notes. But it is fiendishly complicated to do randomized controlled trials on more than one intervention at a time.

However, STAT has learned, a large-scale, U.S.-based lifestyle intervention study to prevent cognitive decline and dementia will be introduced at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London in July. It is expected to be modeled on a Finnish studythat found that a kitchen sink approach – healthy eating, brain training, exercise, and managing diabetes and cardiovascular risk – slows cognitive decline.
